Insights from Insurtech Boston ’24

On May 7, some of the most brilliant minds in insurance came together for Insurtech Boston, an event that has been a place for insurance industry professionals to connect since 2016. It is always amazing to get together and see what innovative startups are emerging and to discuss challenges and trends with new peers and familiar faces.

This year, we had hundreds of attendees from across the industry, including venture capitalists, carriers (including many national carriers), tech companies, agencies, associations, media professionals, and nine expert speakers, many of whom were co-founders and CEOs at insurtech companies. Our discussions ranged from AI and telematics to debunking insurance myths and the challenges of entrepreneurship.

“Like Insurtech Boston, Ivans is focused on connecting the insurance ecosystem, both with technology and in-person relationships. Connectivity is the lifeblood of innovation. By providing connections to our network of agents and carriers, technology partners can focus on what makes them truly valuable to the industry, whatever that may be. It’s my hope that this report provides you with meaningful insights that will inspire continued collaboration. Enjoy – and stay connected!”

5 Untold Truths of Insurance Success

Kate Terry, CEO of Surround Insurance, offered her take on improving our businesses (and lives!) by avoiding five common assumptions that can lead us astray. The five truths she found to debunk the myths include:

  • Consumers want digital ease and humanity.

  • Wisdom
    precedes excellent automation.

  • Spreading ourselves too thin leads to mediocrity not excellence.

  • If you haven’t read something, you don’t know what it says.

  • Taking care of people is noble work.

“It turns out that wisdom in the sense of knowing your customers and knowing what you’re trying to accomplish actually precedes automation. It sounds obvious, but when you put those cool toys in my hand, it wasn’t so obvious to me.”

One Place to Connect All Systems

Ivans was created over 40 years ago to solve the problem of connectivity, and in recent years, the technology has been updated into a modern tech stack to help connect the industry across the entire lifecycle of a policy. From automating book rolls to connecting with your clients and partners and accessing new insights to help you make better choices, there are more opportunities than ever to connect in the industry. At events like Insurtech Boston, we have the opportunity to build on these connections to continue to be the place that connects the insurance ecosystem. Ivans’ single network of solutions can connect you with new innovative tech, better partnerships and frictionless experiences.

We partner with leading companies across the industry, like Applied, Hawksoft, Zywave, Vertafore, Mylo, InsurZone, EZLynx, Duck Creek, Origami Risk, and Guidewire – just to mention a few – to fuel growth across the ecosystem. We support many of these solutions by connecting them to a growing list of national and regional carriers that provide commercial quoting, policy data, claims communication, and more to thousands of agencies. We believe in working together across the industry to push it forward. That includes helping agencies optimize their technology solutions with connectivity and supporting carriers to digitally connect with their distribution channel.

“The good news is that with technology solutions from Ivans and our partners across the industry, you can strengthen your relationships and grow your business.”

Bridging the Disconnect

As we attend industry events, distribute surveys and chat with the industry, we hear both positive connectivity stories and areas to grow in the future. Let’s take a look at where agents want to see connectivity.

Agents are saying they want more:

  • Claims and Loss Run Data

Agents want historical claims data, different from transactional claims download. They’re looking for a standardized format for loss runs.

  • Simplified Submission Process

Over half of the agents surveyed in our most recent Connectivity survey want a more digital commercial submission process, including more transparency and access to carrier data. Carriers tell us they want to be able to quote without going back and forth with the agents.

  • Smart Appetite & Eligibility

Agencies and carriers both want a more dynamic way to communicate product details in real time. In our survey, 83% of agents said they would write more business with carriers if they provided real-time appetite and quoting within their management systems.

  • Employee Benefits

We have seen much interest from agencies to have data exchange (download and quoting) with Benefits carriers. Nearly 30% of agents in a recent survey would like additional automation for their Benefits business.

Today’s Tech Connecting the Ecosystem

There’s no longer a need to manually fill out applications or visit multiple carrier portals, but organizations supporting more digital methods are still growing. This is where the need for adoption comes in. As technology solutions evolve, it is important to see companies adopt these solutions so the value can be realized by the user and the provider, and technology keeps getting better. If the thought of new technology seems daunting, know that there are teams of professionals and peers across the industry who are here to help and collaborate with you to create a more connected ecosystem.

Tech Capabilities That Connect the Industry

  • The Power of Connected Download

Download gives carriers and MGAs the ability to deliver the most current and accurate policy-related information and documents directly to agents. Ivans Exchange™, the go-to hub for managing download connections, is a secure way of communicating policy information that never stops improving.

  • Connected Commercial Lines Quoting

Commercial lines processes can be clunky and disconnected, but with the latest tech, they don’t have to be. With unparalleled appetite tools and a growing list of commercial rating partners, markets can deliver world-class commercial lines submissions and quoting. Ivans Distribution Platform™ makes it easier for carriers and MGAs to connect and access their agency distribution channel so they can market, quote and bind more of the right commercial lines business.

  • Marketing Insights

With more than one million daily transactions across Ivans and all the rich data we have from across the industry, we are often asked how Ivans can help the industry understand business better. Heeding the call, we launched Ivans Insights™, a powerful analytics solution unlike anything else in the market to give carriers and MGAs the data they need to pinpoint opportunities for growth and drill into agency details, including the states they do business in, their lines of business break down, and premium and account volume for each. Carriers and MGAs can leverage this one-of-a-kind agency book of business data in 13 individual reports for advanced analysis and insights on areas to prioritize.

  • Book Rolls Made Easy for Personal and Commercial Lines

With Ivans Bookroll™, carriers can easily collaborate with agencies to automate book roll. Ivans Bookroll started out with personal lines and, in 2023, supported nearly 1,000 book rolls with more than $406 million in premiums for several national and regional carriers. And this year, we debuted the capability for commercial lines. Now, carriers can securely transfer commercial lines policy data to quote and roll an agency’s book of business entirely online
